Event proceeds benefit San Diego organizations fighting violence against women
Thursday, March 03, 2011
(San Diego) - Despite decades of education and efforts to strengthen the laws and penalties, one in four women in the United States will still experience domestic violence in her lifetime. In San Diego County, there were more than 17,000 reports of domestic violence made to law enforcement in 2009. The District Attorney's office says it reviewed 6,000 domestic violence related cases during 2009.
Myra Chack Fleischer is all too familiar with the impact of domestic violence on women as well as their children and other family members in her San Diego family law practice. Fleischer also assists domestic violence victims seeking help through Project SARAH (Stop Abusive Relationships at Home) at Jewish Family Services, offering pro bono legal counsel.
As part of a nationwide effort to end violence against women, Fleischer & Ravreby is proud to sponsor the San Diego "V-Day 2011" production of Eve Ensler's acclaimed "The Vagina Monologues" on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Birth North Park Theatre.
"When you witness the damage done to women and families by domestic violence, who wouldn't be moved to help?" said Fleischer. "Sponsoring 'The Vagina Monologues' and V-Day 2011 in San Diego is a privilege for me and a fun, thought-provoking way to help women speak up and speak out about ending domestic violence."
The cast features extraordinary San Diego women from all walks of life, including survivors of domestic violence. One hundred percent of the event proceeds go toward the four beneficiary organizations: Speak for Success Women's Leadership Institute; Jeans 4 Justice, and Humanity in Motion, and V-Day, local women's leadership organizations working to end violence toward women through activism, advocacy, mentoring, coaching and training. All the performers and show production staff are volunteers; sponsors such as Fleischer & Ravreby help cover the hard costs.
There are over 5,000 Vagina Monologues plays being put on this season alone across the United States including San Diego to raise money to stop sexual violence. Sixteen stories about women's experiences that evoke laughter, pain, frustration, sadness, fear and excitement. This is a movement that creates transformational experiences for both the actors and the audience.
Tickets are available by calling 858-367-3513, or online here. Tickets may be purchased and donated to domestic violence victims to permit them to attend. Tax-deductible donations may also be contributed in conjunction with ticket sales.
